How Much Does eBay Take From a Sale in the US? (2026)

For most categories on eBay.com, including clothing, eBay takes a 13.6% final value fee on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 when the order is $10 or less). Total means item price plus shipping you charge, and sales tax where it applies. A $25 item with $5 shipping loses $4.48 and leaves $25.52. Women's handbags and some other categories use different rates. Checked on eBay's page, 4 October 2026.

The formula

eBay's fee page lists, for most categories, a final value fee of 13.6% on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 (calculated per item), and 2.35% on the portion above $7,500. On top of that comes a per-order fee of $0.40, or $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less. Insertion fees and optional upgrades are separate and not modelled in our calculator.

The base is the whole amount the buyer pays, not only the item price. Shipping you charge is inside it, and so is sales tax collected from the buyer. People often work out 13.6% of the item price and are surprised when the real deduction is a little higher. Our calculator leaves tax out so the examples below show the floor; with tax collected, your fee is slightly higher.

Final value fee plus per-order fee, most categories, tax not included. Computed with the Resale IQ fee calculator from eBay's schedule retrieved 4 October 2026.

The exceptions that matter for clothing sellers

Women's Bags & Handbags: 15% when the total amount of the sale is $2,000 or less, 9% above that.

Our calculator models the handbag rate as a category option. Other categories can differ, so check the category row on eBay's page for what you sell.

If you sell outside clothing, read the category row on eBay's page; our calculator uses the main rate unless you pick the handbag option, and says so.

Turn it into a price you can set

Decide what you want to receive after eBay, then work backwards. Add what you paid for shipping, then divide by roughly 0.864 (one minus 13.6%) and add the per-order fee. An easier route is the eBay US fee calculator: type your target and it shows the sale price that gets you there. The same page lists the source and the date we checked it.

Two quick habits help. First, charge shipping honestly: it is part of the fee base, so shipping that you charge below cost costs you twice. Second, remember that a $9 sale has a proportionally larger fee than a $90 one because of the flat per-order amount, which is why very cheap single items rarely pay on eBay.

What this does not include

Insertion fees, optional upgrades and Promoted Listings are extra and only apply if you use them. Where eBay collects sales tax from the buyer it is passed on, so it is not income, but it does sit inside the fee base. International orders and currency conversion can add charges that this simple view omits. We also do not model Store subscriptions.

Before you list

Photograph on a plain, bright background; the free listing photo tool squares and cleans the shots in your browser. Weigh and measure the parcel so the shipping you charge matches the cost. If you are buying a bundle to resell, the lot calculator gives a cost per piece before you pay. For other marketplaces, compare with Depop's fees and see which listing channel suits the item.

Three common mistakes when working out eBay fees

Forgetting that shipping is in the base. Charging $8 for shipping on a $100 item raises the fee by about $1.09, because 13.6% applies to the $108 total. If shipping costs you $8, you are paying eBay a cut of your own shipping money. That is fine, but it needs to be in your maths.

Ignoring the per-order fee on cheap items. A $9 order pays $0.30 on top of 13.6%. The flat part is why very low-priced single listings leave you a thin payout; a bundle of three $9 items bought together pays one per-order fee instead of three.

Mixing up listing fees and final value fees. The 250 free listings a month cover insertion fees only. The final value fee is still charged when an item sells. Sellers who list a few items now and then rarely hit the insertion fee, but they always meet the final value fee.

Run a few of your real prices through the calculator before you commit to eBay for a batch. Pick the three most expensive and three cheapest items, and see where the flat per-order fee bites. If the answer is that the cheap ones barely pay, bundle them or list them elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?

For most categories, 13.6% of the total amount plus $0.40. A $100 item with $8 shipping is a $108 total: $14.69 final value fee plus $0.40, so fees of $15.09 and $92.91 left, before sales tax and your own shipping cost.

What percentage does eBay take in the US?

13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 for most categories, plus a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 for orders of $10 or less). Some categories differ, for example women's handbags at 15% up to $2,000.

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping you charge the buyer and any sales tax collected.

Are listing fees and upgrades extra?

Insertion fees and optional upgrades such as Promoted Listings are separate from the final value fee. Check eBay's page for your category; our calculator does not model them.
