The arithmetic that matters
Divide the total cost by the number of items you realistically expect to SELL — not the number of items in the lot. Assume a meaningful share is unsellable.
If your effective cost per sellable item isn't comfortably below your buy-below price for that category, the lot is not a deal. What actually left the shelf this week is that buy-below input.
How to reduce risk
Start with a small lot from a supplier before committing to volume. Ask for grading definitions in writing and photos of an actual lot.
Prefer categorised lots (e.g. branded outerwear) over unsorted mixed clothing — unsorted is where dead stock hides. Brands clearing fastest right now tells you which categories are even worth a lot.
