Markup and margin calculator for resellers
Markup and margin are not the same number, and mixing them up is how a flip ends up underpriced. Enter what you paid, your extra costs and the price you want on Vinted or any platform: see profit, margin, markup, ROI and the break-even price. Or work backwards from the margin you want.
Pure arithmetic on the numbers you enter, in your own currency. It is a planning aid, not a promise of profit: check your platform's current fee page and enter the percentage and fixed fee it charges you. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How the numbers are worked out
Total cost = buy cost + extra costs Fees = selling price × fee % + fixed fee Profit = selling price − fees − total cost Margin = profit ÷ selling price Markup = (selling price − total cost) ÷ total cost ROI = profit ÷ total cost Break-even price = (total cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee %) Price for a target margin = (total cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %)
- Total cost = buy cost + extra costs. Fees = selling price × fee % + fixed fee.
- Profit = selling price − fees − total cost.
- Margin = profit ÷ selling price. Markup = (selling price − total cost) ÷ total cost. ROI = profit ÷ total cost.
- Break-even price = (total cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee %). Price for a target margin = (total cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %).
Margin and markup questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is the amount you add on top of your cost, as a percentage of that cost. Margin is the profit as a percentage of the selling price. The same flip always has a lower margin than markup: buying at 50 and listing at 100 is a 100% markup but a 50% margin.
How do I price an item for a target margin?
Switch to "Price from a target margin", enter your costs, fees and the margin you want. The calculator returns the price to ask. Note that markup is not the same as margin: a 50% markup gives a margin of about 33%.
What is ROI and how is it different from margin?
ROI is profit divided by the money you put in (buy cost plus extra costs). Margin divides profit by the selling price instead. ROI tells you how hard your money works; margin tells you how much of each sale you keep.
What is the break-even price?
It is the lowest price at which you neither gain nor lose: it covers your buy cost, extra costs, the fixed fee and the percentage fee. Listing below it means a loss.
Which fees should I enter?
Enter the percentage and any fixed fee your platform charges you on a sale. Fees differ by platform and change over time, so check the current fee page of the platform you list on. Enter 0 if you pay none.
Does it work on Vinted and other platforms?
Yes. It is arithmetic on your own inputs, so it fits Vinted and any other resale platform, in any currency.
Is anything stored or sent?
No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing you enter leaves the page.
